Common classification of territorial units for statistics (NUTS): accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the EU

2007/0038(COD)

The European Parliament adopted a resolution drafted by Gerardo GALEOTE (EPP-ED, ES) on the proposal amending Regulation (EC) No 1059/2003 on the establishment of a common classification of territorial units for statistics (NUTS) by reason of the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the EU. It made two amendments:

  • a new recital stated that, since the objectives of the Regulation, namely the creation of common statistical standards that permit the production of harmonised data, cannot be sufficiently achieved by the Member States acting alone, the Community may adopt measures in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity as set out in Article 5 of the Treaty. In accordance with the principle of proportionality, as set out in that Article, this Regulation does not go beyond what is necessary to achieve those objectives;
  • Annex III is amended to show Obshtini for Bulgaria (deleting Naseleni mesta) inserted between Belgium and the Czech Republic.
