The European Parliament adopted by 640 votes to 18, with 17 abstentions, a legislative resolution on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Regulation (EU) No 508/2014 as regards certain rules relating to the European Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Fund due to the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the Union.
The European Parliament adopted its position at first reading under the ordinary legislative procedure without amending the Commission proposal.
The proposed act aims to mitigate the impacts that a Brexit without an agreement would have on fisheries at Union level. It amends EU Regulation (EU) No 508/2014 to provide financial mitigation measures for EU vessels affected by a possible sudden closure of UK waters due to the withdrawal of the UK from the EU.
In concrete terms, the proposal aims to allow fishermen and operators from EU Member States to receive compensation from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) for the temporary cessation of fishing activities.
This Regulation should enter into force as a matter of urgency and apply from the day following that on which the Treaties cease to apply to the United Kingdom.
