PURPOSE : to lay down minimum standards for the protection of pigs.
COMMUNITY MEASURE : Council Directive 2001/88/EC amending directive 91/630/EEC laying down minimum standards for the protection of pigs.
CONTENT : The Council adopted this Directive, the main aims of which are:
- the ban on the use of individual stalls for pregnant sows and gilts and the use of tethers
- the increase in the living space availalbe for sows and pigs
- the introduction of a higher level of training and competence on welfare issues for stockmen and personnel in charge of animals.
- the Commission must draw up two separate reports. The first, to be submitted before 1 July 2005, will take into account socio-economic consequences, environmental effects and different climactic conditions. The other, to be submitted before 1 January 2008, will cover such matters as the effects of stock density and the impact of stall design.
Parliament's concerns on production in third countries are not part of the Directive.
