PURPOSE : to set up a Social Protection Committee.
COMMUNITY MEASURE : Council Decision 2000/436/EC setting up a Social Protection Committee.
CONTENT : the Decision aims to create a Social Protection Committee in charge of assisting the Council in the exercise of its responsibilities in the field of social protection.
It shall be charged with:
- following the developments of social protection policies in the Member States and in the Community;
- to facilitate the exchange of information, expertise and good practice between the Member States and with the Commission;
- to prepare an annual report on social protection to be presented to the Council.
The Committee shall work, as appropriate, in cooperation with other relevant bodies and committees dealing with social and economic policy matters, such as the Employment Committee and the Economic Policy Guidelines and also establish appropriate contacts with the social contacts. The Committee may, at the request of the Council or the Commission or on its own initiative, prepare other reports or opinions or undertake other work in the area of its competence.
