EC/Morocco Euro-Mediterranean association agreement

1995/0363(AVC)
The committee was in favour of Parliament approving the report by Mr Otto von HABSBURG (PPE, D) on the Association Agreement between the European Union and Morocco, with 39 votes in favour, 9 against and 6 abstentions. For this type of agreement, the European Parliament's opinion must be supported by the majority of the votes cast. After the vote, the rapporteur stated that he believed that the relations between the European Union and Morocco should be analysed in the light of the region's geographical and cultural history. In his view, "Tunisia and Morocco do not represent ideal democracies. However, they should be supported in their campaign against extremism. We must work within the framework of the Barcelona Conference which aims to help the Southern Mediterranean become a stable region."
