Health problems affecting intra-Community trade in bovine animals and swine

1998/0194(CNS)
OBJECTIVE: adoption of a reasonable time limit for transposition of the new rules on monitoring and surveillance of bovine tuberculosis, bovine brucellosis and enzootic bovine leukosis. SUBSTANCE: Directive 97/12/EC lays down particular requirements with regard to the updating of criteria for defining the health status of animal populations at herd, region and Member State level as regards bovine tuberculosis, bovine brucellosis and enzootic bovine leukosis. On the basis of a proposal submitted to the Council before July 1997, these criteria should be updated by 01/01/1998. As the changes entailed by the updating of monitoring and surveillance programmes cannot be implemented in the field at short notice, it is proposed that the provisions of Directive 97/12/EC concerning the period within which Member States must transpose and introduce new rules for disease monitoring and surveillance should be amended.
