Statistical returns in respect of the carriage of goods and passengers by sea

OBJECTIVE : establishment of a coordinated and harmonized statistical information system on carriage of goods and passengers by sea. COMMUNITY MEASURE : Council Directive 95/64/EC on statistical returns in respect of carriage of goods and passengers by sea. SUBSTANCE : - Member States shall collect Community statistics on the carriage of goods and passengers by sea-going vessels calling at ports in their territories; - the data collected shall relate to cargo and passenger information and information on the vessel (excluding vessels with a gross tonnage of less than 100); - for the purposes of the directive, a list of ports, coded and classified according to countries and maritime coastal areas, shall be drawn up. Each Member State shall select from this list only ports handling more than one million tonnes of goods or recording more than 200 000 passenger movements annually; for a period of no more than three years from the entry into force of this Directive, each Member State may select only ports handling more than two million tonnes of goods or recording more than 400 000 passenger movements annually; - the results of the collection of data shall be transmitted by the Member States to the Statistical Office of the European Communities. The Commission shall disseminate the statistical data; - during a transitional period of no more than three years, derogations may be granted; - for the first three years in which the statistical returns are made, a financial contribution from the Community towards the cost of the work involved may be granted to the Member States.
