Packaging: marking and establishment of a conformity assessment procedure

1996/0123(COD)
The Parliament approved the report drafted by Ms. Françoise Grossetête (F, EPP) on the Commission's proposed Directive subject to a number of amendments. The following is the gist of the amendments adopted : - Member States must transpose the Directive into national law within three years of its entry into force 'provided that packaging and packaging waste can be treated according to their marking'. - a more detailed set of markings than those of the Commission are introduced (to identify aluminium, steel, glass and plastics). - Packaging manufacturers should share responsibility with packers and fillers for implementation of the legislation.
