Training, education: Socrates programme, socio-economic background of ERASMUS students. Report 1997-1998

2000/2089(COS)
In approving the report drafted by Mr Christopher HEATON-HARRIS (EPP/ED, UK), the European Parliament adopted the resolution on the report from the Commission - 'Survey into the socio-economic background of Erasmus students'. However, the Parliament, nevertheless, calls upon the Commission to submit a report on the reasons why many students do not feel encouraged to take part in the Erasmus programme. The Member States are called upon to optimise coordination between national student financial support and Erasmus grants with a view to ensuring the widest possible take-up of the Erasmus programme and promoting social equality in access to the programme. The Commission is called on to consider, within the total sum of money already available for this scheme, other forms of indirect support (reductions in fares, accommodation allowances, systems of loans to cover the cost of mobility, etc) in addition to the present Erasmus grant to make it more effective.
