The European Parliament adopted by 422 votes to 147, with 48 abstentions, a resolution tabled by the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs on the Commissions decision to activate Article 7(1) TEU as regards the situation in Poland.
Parliament welcomed the Commissions decision of 20 December 2017 to activate Article 7(1) TEU as regards the situation in Poland and supports the Commissions call on the Polish authorities to address the problems.
It called on the Council to take swift action in accordance with the provisions set out in Article 7(1) TEU and invited the Council to keep Parliament fully and regularly informed of progress made and action taken at every step of the procedure.
It is recalled that in its resolution of 15 November 2017 on the situation of the rule of law and democracy in Poland, Parliament noted that the current situation in Poland represents a clear risk of a serious breach of the values referred to in Article 2 of the TEU.
