The European Parliament adopted a resolution making one amendment to the Commission's proposal. The rapporteur was Struan STEVENSON (EPP-ED, UK). The amendment stated that the Regulation recognised the vital importance of conservation zones in the development of a sustainable fisheries policy and accepts the key position of the Irish Box as one of the Union's most sensitive nursery and spawning grounds. Therefore Regulations 2847/93/EC and 685/95/EC will be maintained for a period of ten years. At the end of this period ICES and STECF will carry out a review to establish whether the policy of restricted access has assisted in meeting the objectives of the cod recovery plan in rebuilding endangered whitefish stocks.
